Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
A city in crisis
Stop and imagine with me a perfect world. Or even a perfect city. No hunger, no poverty, no crime, no heartbreak over lost relationships. No more worry about the loss of your job or property, and no more fear about tomorrow or death. That is hard to imagine. Why? Because we face one crisis after another. Sudden disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods leave families homeless or grieving. Drug abuse, mass shootings, and child trafficking bring tears, heartache, and unsafe neighborhoods. Global issues such as wars, genocide, displacement, and hunger are increasing. The Bible warns of a day when “men’s hearts [fail] them from fear” (Luke 21:26), and it seems we are living in that very moment. Where can we find hope when life feels so dark and uncertain?
Renewed Hope in Times of Anxiety
In moments of worry, it may seem impossible to quiet our racing minds. Yet many find hope by turning to Jesus Christ. The Bible shows that God wants to help us find freedom from our fears. Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.”
These words remind us that we are not alone, even when our world feels like it’s falling apart.
An Invitation to Find Rest
Jesus Himself invites us to bring our troubles to Him. Matthew 11:28 reads, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Whether you’re facing the aftermath of a disaster, the pain of a loved one’s addiction, or the shock of a tragic event in your community, Jesus offers a calm that can fill your heart with peace. Instead of being stuck in fear, we can turn to the One who is bigger than our problems.
Turning Worry into Prayer
Another scripture, Philippians 4:6-7, tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
This short passage shows us a different way to handle worry. Instead of letting fear take over, we can pray. As we place our cares in God’s hands, we trade panic for peace. The Bible promises that God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts, no matter how bad things look.
Finding peace in the midst of tragedy
Recent events remind us how fragile life can be. Whether it’s homes destroyed by disasters, the heartbreak of sudden loss, or the terror caused by mass shootings, it’s natural to feel anxious or afraid. Yet it’s possible to find inner calm even when troubles rage all around us. This peace does not come from our own strength, but from trusting Jesus to walk beside us through every trial. Even if our circumstances do not change right away, our hearts can grow calmer as we lean on Him. Each new day, He can lift the weight of anxiety and fill us with hope.
Find Support
In addition to prayer and reading Scripture, God has intended that you find encouragement in a local church or a group of friends who share your faith. Sharing experiences, praying together, and helping one another through hard times can strengthen your spirit. No one should face these hardships alone.
A Light in Dark Times
Anxiety can cast a shadow over your life, no matter where you call home. But Jesus Christ shines a light that can guide us out of worry and distress. By believing in Him and receiving Him as Savior and Lord, you can experience present and eternal freedom from fear. Call on Him to find eternal salvation and everlasting joy. He offers a peace that stands firm even when everything around us feels shaky. In the end, disaster or evil does not have the final word—God’s loving presence does.
