Attention to Detail

Listen to Audio

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4

When the instructor dropped a dead fish on the student’s desk, the young man was a bit startled. “Write a description,” was all the teacher said as he walked away.

Ichthyology was a course the young man had eagerly anticipated, especially since the instructor was a renowned authority in fisheries biology. The student wrote some brief notes about the fish specimen and submitted his paper. But it came back with a single comment: “Pay attention to detail.”

After several similar returns, the frustrated young man began to scrutinize his subject with a magnifying glass. The unusual scale pattern suddenly caught his attention. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? Then he noticed that different colors reflected off the scales as the angle of the light changed. With renewed interest, the young man continued his now meticulous examination, noticing remarkable features previously missed. When he submitted his detailed description, the instructor accepted it with a smile of approval.

We can scan, skim over, or simply glance at a given passage of Scripture, but there is little profit in such an approach to God’s Word. The Bible admonishes us to, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (2 Timothy 2:15). Study implies diligence and intense concentration, and a workman is one who is willing to labor. His attention to detail ensures that his efforts will be pleasing to His Master.

How vital is it that we carefully study our Creator’s instruction manual? If we take a persistent and conscientious approach to His Word, we will not need to be ashamed of our workmanship.
