The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. Psalm 111:2
Johannes Kepler was a Bible-believing mathematician, scientist, and astronomer who lived in the 1500s and 1600s. Intrigued by the perfect order he observed in the orbits of the planets, he theorized that there must be a mathematical equation that describes their interrelationships. Since God is a God of perfect order, nothing He does is random. And since mathematics is a pure science, there must be a correlation between the two. Kepler was convinced that the solar system is like an immense clock designed by the Master Creator, with all the component pieces working together in perfect harmony. But he struggled for twelve years before finding the solution to the mystery.
The solution is known today as Kepler’s Third Law of Planetary Motion. It states that the squared time of a planet’s orbit divided by the cubed distance of that planet from the sun yields a fraction that is exactly the same for every planet. Perfect order!
The false science so prevalent in our day describes the heavens as a consequence of some chaotic explosion of materials of unknown origin, resulting in a random arrangement of the celestial bodies by chance alone. Perfect confusion! However, the Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), and, “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).
When I consider the heavens, “the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou has ordained” (Psalm 8:3), I am truly in awe of the beauty, order, and magnificence of the natural creation our wonderful Lord has made for us to enjoy.
A million torches, lighted by Thy hand,
Wander unwearied through the blue abyss:
They own Thy power, accomplish Thy command,
All gay with life, all eloquent with bliss. – Gavrila R. Derzhavin
