I Can Afford It

Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2

According to current prices, a Montblanc Meisterstück ballpoint pen can be purchased for $1,005, a Gucci Lady Web purse for $18,000, a Hermes Orange Carbon Taurillon bicycle for $14,000, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller wristwatch for $48,850. These prices are far out of range for most of us. But if our financial resources actually enabled us to afford such items, would that justify a purchase? When buying any item, there is a Biblical principle to consider in addition to whether we can afford it.

The advertisers of this world will always strive to convince us that we need more and more of the newest and best products in order to be happy and fulfilled. But extravagance and self-indulgence in homes, furnishings, automobiles, or vacations reveals a serious misunderstanding of the principle of stewardship. Unfortunately, it seems that the simple lifestyle that was once a trademark of the Anabaptist people is rapidly being replaced in many areas by a mentality of affluence and luxury. Such lavishness directly contradicts a profession of being “strangers and pilgrims” in this world (1 Peter 2:11).

Contentment with the simple, functional, and practical necessities of life will deliver us from the “keeping up with the Joneses” syndrome. It will also provide us with more opportunities to exercise self-denial, as well as to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20), which we can do by investing in the needs of less fortunate people instead of indulging in self. We must never forget Jesus’ words about the Day of Judgment in Matthew 25:40: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Lay your treasures up on high; you’ll possess them by and by.
