Little Things

Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. Proverbs 16:8

My two young sons and I had packed horses and were riding in the spectacular Wallowa Mountains of eastern Oregon. Suddenly two of our horses exploded in a fury of whirling and bucking that left my youngest son and me in a dazed heap at the side of the rocky trail. Bees! How could such little things cause so much havoc?

In a society that is impressed by superlatives, we may tend to brush off little things as insignificant, but the Bible gives a different perspective. “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9). Just as yeast spreads through a large quantity of bread dough, so it is for even a sin that seems very small. If it is not dealt with, it will spread throughout the life of a person or a congregation. Is there really such a thing as a little sin in God’s sight?

Solomon said that it’s “the little foxes, that spoil the vines” (Song of Solomon 2:15). James wrote that the tongue is a very little member, but it can be “a fire, a world of iniquity” (James 3:6). As one small match dropped on the forest floor can create an enormous fire, so can a few little words of idle gossip cause great turmoil. Jesus warned, “Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).

The opposite is also true. Little things can bring great blessings on others and also bring glory to God. Just a few kind words of sympathy or encouragement can be a healing balm to one who is discouraged or hurting—a little thoughtfulness truly goes a long way. If we are faithful to our Lord in little things, the big things have a way of taking care of themselves.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much. Luke 16:10
