Roots and Fruits

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Luke 6:43

The Himalayan blackberry grows profusely in our area and should be considered a “good tree” since it bears a tasty and nutritious fruit. However, it has several characteristics that make it quite unpopular with landowners. It was introduced to North America from eastern Asia and is now classified as an invasive species due to its aggressive nature. Once established, it matures quickly and spreads rapidly until it overwhelms all other ground cover in extensive areas. Mowing or burning the plants only seems to stimulate more vigorous growth. This plant and the curse of sin are similar in some noteworthy ways.

Both the blackberry and sin bear fruits that appeal to the flesh, and both eventually overwhelm and control their host. As one must dig up and dispose of the roots to eradicate the berry vines, so sin must be dealt with at its root. Superficial methods that treat only the surface symptoms will never resolve the heart of the problem. Sin, like the blackberry plant, can spread aggressively, whether by personal example, speaking, or writing. However, “the root of the righteous yieldeth [good] fruit” (Proverbs 12:12), for “if the root be holy, so are the branches” (Romans 11:16).

Jesus told His disciples, “I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain” (John 15:16). Deep roots in good soil are essential for both a person and a plant to produce worthwhile fruit. “He that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit” (Matthew 13:23). Let us all ensure that our roots go deep into the good soil of God’s Word so that our fruit may truly honor our Lord.

Therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 3:10
