And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21

I had been driving east through western Nebraska late one night when I came to a sign saying, “Welcome to Wyoming.” If I continued in the same direction, I would certainly never arrive at my Indiana destination. I had come to a detour earlier that evening and had apparently missed one of the detour signs along the secondary roads I was directed to follow.

Our spiritual journey also has various signposts along the way. The detour to PLEASURE is an attractive sign that points to a far more heavily traveled highway than the posted road to PURITY. The smooth road to COOL that branches off to one side attracts far more young people than the continuing path to HOLINESS. At the crossroads of MY WAY and THY WAY, another decision must be made, while the signpost to WORLDLY SUCCESS definitely indicates a different direction than the one pointing to VICTORY.

Some signposts have ambiguous wording that conceals where the road actually goes, so it is essential that we carefully discern the spiritual focus of the travelers on those roads. While many bypass the signpost to FAITHFULNESS and join family and friends on the road to TOLERANCE OF SIN, our divine Guide encourages us to persist on the TRUE WAY, even though we sometimes feel that we are the only ones on that road.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). There are no alternate routes that lead to the heavenly city. Even though the right road may have steep and rough places, let’s travel it together because its destination is assured.

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Proverbs 4:26
